Well, predicting events in real-word environments sounds like the very objective of adaptive systems, which are studied from many different approaches including artificial cognitive systems. Is that what you mean by prediction?
I have always considered cognitive architectures as part of the AI field.. I don't quite see consciousness studies as a competition of AI. Actually, what could happen about the problem of machine consciousness is that it can be characterized as AI-Complete.
