Scientific Consensus: Best Theory of Consciousness - 2009/07/06 00:15 There is a group of volunteers working on an open survey project to collaboratively develop concise descriptions of the best theories of consciousness, and then measure and track how much consensus there is, especially amongst experts for each. They are using the open survey system at http://canonizer.com which is being developed for such purposes.

Already, the Consciousness is Representational and Real camp continues to extend its lead in the amount of scientific consensus it has compared to any other theory of consciousness. Leading scientists such as Steven Lehar, John Smythies, and others are supporting and developing this camp.

There is always the chance that a scientific discovery, or demonstrable scientific proof is about to show up which will convert all experts to accept the same theory. We would like to rigorously track this process as it happens, and in fact believe it has already started.

If you have an idea which theory this might turn out to be, we would certainly love to here from you.

Re:Scientific Consensus: Best Theory of Consciousness - 2009/07/08 16:36 Hi Brent, thanks for the pointers.

For me, trying to identify or finding consensus in the research topic is such a big challenge as the research work itself It'll be interesting to see what is the outcome of the initiative though.

The thing is that the term consciousness is used with many different meanings, so many theories about consciousness deal with different aspects. From what I've seen so far it seems that the study you mention if focused on theories that try to explain phenomenal consciousness.

I try to keep a list of most salient theories of consciousness at:

--> Theories of Consciousness

Nevertheless, there's still a lot missing there... Like Hameroff's conscious pilot theory, Metzinger's approach, Chalmers, etc., etc. I would not vote for any particular approach, as I see them all lile possible different partial explanations of the same global phenomena.. I'd rather say that a consensus might probably arise from a unifying theory...

Re:Scientific Consensus: Best Theory of Consciousness - 2009/07/27 12:19 Is there a relation between artificial consciouness and artificial intelligence ?

Thanks

Re:Scientific Consensus: Best Theory of Consciousness - 2009/07/28 14:25 Hello Abdallah,
Sure, I have always considered Artificial Consciousness (or equally Machine Consciousness) as a subfield of AI. That is probably the case nowadays that we have very well established fields in AI like planning, multi-agent systems, genetic algorithms, artificial neural networks, etc. Of course, real implementations are usually hybrid and different areas have to be integrated. However, as for academia, I can really identify well defined areas. In this context, I see Machine Consciousness (MC) as an emerging (and very promising) field that could be well located under the umbrella of AI, but has a really strong multidisciplinary character.

Given the multidisciplinary nature of Machine Consciousness, it is easy to find strong bonds with neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, art, engineering, and of course Computer Science.

Other obvious characterization (for me) of the Machine Consciousness field is the so-called strong AI. Even though original strong AI school and current research in MC are not comparable in the details, the background problem is the same: designing and building human-like machines.

Re:Scientific Consensus: Best Theory of Consciousness - 2009/07/29 14:48 Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

I think that consciousness allow us to predict external events in an unexpected environment. So consciousness is not a part of artificial intelligence, it will be a completion of AI.

Re:Scientific Consensus: Best Theory of Consciousness - 2009/07/29 15:22 Well, predicting events in real-word environments sounds like the very objective of adaptive systems, which are studied from many different approaches including artificial cognitive systems. Is that what you mean by prediction?

I have always considered cognitive architectures as part of the AI field.. I don't quite see consciousness studies as a competition of AI. Actually, what could happen about the problem of machine consciousness is that it can be characterized as AI-Complete.

Re:Scientific Consensus: Best Theory of Consciousness - 2011/05/12 16:43 Hi All,

I've been following this discussion on and off. Recently I made a site to propose a new definition of consciousness based on the brain creating a representation of the world. The site is here: www.consciousthoughts.net

I'd love to hear any comments/questions/suggestions, etc.

Tristan
