Lego NXT firmware loss - 2007/01/10 12:29 Imagine you run out of battery while you are uploading the firmware to your NXT brick. The result is a corrupted (or incomplete) firmware load, which means that the PC does not recognize the USB NXT device anymore and/or you can't use the brick any other way.

The solution is (thanks to Escuby for this) to ignore Windows is not recognizing the device and use the Lego application to upload the firmware again.
