Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Cognitive Robotics

A new Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Cognitive Robotics (CN-CR, www.psychology.bham.ac.uk/cncr) has been launched, with a multimillion pound investment. The Centre combines research on human cognition, sensory and motor systems, and computational modelling with research on robotic systems leading towards a better understanding of both brain function and advanced robotics. The research will also be translated into innovative treatments for brain injuries and those with degenerative or developmental neurological disorders.

We now seek applications for up to four posts associated with this centre.

Chair in Computational Neuroscience (1 or 2 posts).
Competitive package for an outstanding candidate. (Ref: 38207) You should have an international research record and be making a cutting-edge contribution to the field.

Senior Lectureships or Lectureships (equivalent to US Associate and Assistant Professor respectively) in Computational Neuroscience (2 posts).
Salary from £45,155 to £68,302 a year or from £36,715 to £49,342 a year (Ref: 47252) You will have a growing reputation in the field, a strong publication record and the potential to become a world leader.

Informal enquiries: Professor Glyn Humphreys

Review of 10 conscious robots Print E-mail
Written by Raúl Arrabales

A review of ten conscious robots? Is this correct? Yes, but we are talking about classic TV robots, of course...

A review of most popular commercial conscious robots would be a nice post for this website, but I am afraid this is about science-fiction robots. Computer(Science)Schools.net have recently published a review of 10 classic robots, such as the  human-like Cylons (right picture) of Battlestar Galactica. How far are we from developing robots like these ones? This is really difficult to know, the singularity might be closer than we think, or it might never happen. One thing is for sure, the research on Machine Consciousness should provide us with some partial answers to these questions in the near-term.

In the meantime, we can also get some inspiration from science-fiction: see these 10 Classic TV Robots.

7 Fellowships of the Research Training Group “Sensory Computation in Neural Systems”

The Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience (BCCN) Berlin and the TU Berlin invite applications for *7 Fellowships* of the Research Training Group “Sensory Computation in Neural Systems” (GRK 1589/1).

Doctoral candidates will develop computational methods for the study of sensory computations, focusing on time and dynamics, and apply these in experiments. To this end, the training group brings machine learning and engineering together with neural and cognitive modeling as well as experimental approaches. Each student will be supervised by two investigators with complementary expertise and will be associated with the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin, http://www.bccn-berlin.de/, a well-known research center dedicated to the theoretical study of neural processing.
Candidates are expected to hold a Masters degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject (e.g., neuroscience, cognitive science, computer science, physics, etc.) and have the required advanced mathematical background.
All applications received until November 15, 2010, are assured full consideration. Successful candidates will be invited for a short presentation and an interview, expected to take place in January 2011.
Later applications may be considered if places are still available.
The fellowships of approximately 1500 €/month will be granted for up to three years.
For further information concerning the program and the application procedure, see http://www.bccn-berlin.de/Graduate+Programs/Doctoral+Program/ or e-mail graduateprograms [ at ] bccn-berlin.de
